Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the designs our customers come back for most often. People usually know the colours by heart long before they know what they stand for, so here is the short version.
The yellow triangle
The triangle has three points, one for each of the constituent peoples of the country: Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs. Its shape also echoes the outline of the country itself on a map. The yellow was chosen for the sun, and for the simple optimism of a fresh start.
The stars running along the edge
The white stars are cut off at the top and bottom on purpose. They are meant to continue beyond the flag, suggesting that the story is not finished. The blue background is the same blue used by the Council of Europe, a deliberate nod to Bosnia's place in Europe.
Why 1992 appears on so many designs
1992 is the year Bosnia and Herzegovina was internationally recognised as an independent state. You will see it printed under the crest on many of our pieces, usually next to Sarajevo, the capital.
