Cabo Verde is a small country with an unusually large presence around the world. More Cabo Verdeans live abroad than at home, which is exactly why the flag means so much to the people who wear it.
Ten stars, ten islands
The circle of ten yellow stars on the flag stands for the ten main islands of the archipelago. The blue is the Atlantic that surrounds them, and the white and red stripes represent the road to the future and the effort it takes to build it.
Praia, and the year 1975
Praia, on the island of Santiago, is the capital. 1975 is the year of independence from Portugal. Both appear on our Cabo Verde pieces under the flag.
Why the diaspora matters
From Boston to Rotterdam to Lisbon, Cabo Verdean communities have kept the language, the music and the food alive far from the islands. A shirt is a small thing, but for a lot of our customers it is a way of carrying that with them.
